My journey started, I came across many junctions and bridges and at each step I learned something new of learning and assessments. My first stopover was at my own reflection , where I saw my students as a mirror of my teaching.
I moved further and reflected on my own self. The bits and pieces were joined together and it gave me a complete picture of who I am. It was now making complete sense.
Very happily I took my board and went further, at a corner I meet some of my friends who asked me what I was up to. I told them about my journey and asked them to see what I have had done so far. A few of them commented on my work and there I figured out what Peer assessments means.
From there I developed my own definition of Learning
Caring my file with my work in it, I moved further where I saw some more friends of mine sitting and chatting around. I went to their group to chit chat. We started to talk about our daily routines and the work load, somehow the topic went to find out about what learning is and how it occurs in our respective class rooms. I told them about my journey and asked them to share their definitions of learning. I some how figured that each one of them had a connection at some points with my definition of learning.
The next step was understanding the difference between the two metaphors - Acquisition and Participation metaphors which is also known as the perspectives of learning.
Understanding it in detail; I further continued with my journey and developed my own metaphors of learner and teacher
In my view:
The role of a learner is a stair case. The learner climbs up the stair as he learns each new step. The role of a teacher is an absorbent fabric where it soaks water from one place and squeezes the absorbed water on the other end. This can be explained like taking knowledge/ skills from one end and transferring that to their students on the other end. |
I further continued my journey and developed understanding on learning when I figured out that there are three different theories of Learning - Behaviourism, Constructivism and Congnitivism. The videos below extended my understanding of the learning theories.

Comparing the three theories gives a perfect idea as to how learning happens in what theory.
The next step was to understand what the domains of Learning are, the following video answers the question to the point.
Last but not the least; I came to know that there are certain ideologies of Learning too

My overall experience of Learning

Learning was never was so much fun unless it was understood. I learnt a lot when I learned what is to be learnt and how to learn it.
Learning for me was always a very tedious task. When I first heard that we are going to do assessments for learning in this course, the first feeling I had was, ahhh.. not again!... but when my journey extended, I figured out that learning can be a lot of fun. I understood in the beginning of my journey that learning is not always rote memorizing but can be in all forms from self understanding to peer assessments and so on and so forth. My understanding of learning grew when I came to witness the acquisition and participation metaphors and then developed my own metaphor of a learner and the teacher.
The voyage of learning expanded to the doors of understanding the theories of learning which took a little time but all was worth it. Behaviorism, congnitivism and constructivism were the basic theories that I had never heard of and the deeper exploration of the theories ended up opening new perspective to my understanding of learning.
The domains of learning was again a junction to my understanding of the world of learning where I came to know about the cognitive, affective and psycho motor skills and how each of them can be assessed to find out if students have learned what we wanted them to learn.
The entire learning and understanding learning experience was not only informative but also fun with the activities and group discussions and debates we did in class to learn the learning.
